Recently De Soto High School observed Anti-Bullying Week. To help students appreciate the week, the DHS Cat PRIDE group invited motivational speaker Calvin Terrell to speak at DHS.

He spoke during the last week of September, and addressed issues ranging from race relations to bullying. Many students seemed to connect with what he said.

“I thought it was really good. I liked the key points that he talked about,” senior Billy Bauer said.

Terrell says that he visits schools because he believes they are an important part of the community.

“Schools are the last canters of community, so if you think about …the differences of belief, recreation and industry, everybody still has to come to school. So if we can’t build community in school, we can’t build community,” Terrell said.

Students seemed to be very affected by Terrell’s presentation.

“I thought it was very good, and it hit close to home, so it was really heart wrenching and made people really think about it,” senior Gaby Becerra said.

 Terrell sayys his work is just something that some one has got to do.

 “It needs to be done,” Terrell said.

 DHS students seem to be glad that it was Terrell who was doing the job.

 “I thought he did his job very well and he is a very enlightening speaker,” senior Cameron Pfannenstiel said.

 In addition to the speaker, every morning students would make an announcement reminding students of the lessons they learned, and to think about how their actions effect others.

 Terrell also spoke at Mill Valley High School and held a student and community joint session at Mill Creek Middle School.
