As 2023 comes to its final notes, musical enthusiasts all over the world anticipate Spotify’s annual listening history analyzer, Spotify Wrapped.
Spotify Wrapped has been ongoing since 2016 and has seen multiple changes along the way as many people get into the mindset of having the perfect wrapped.
Wrapped shows people their music history from their top songs and artists, it also gives people.. what?
The musical recap from the year will show people their top 5 songs and artists. Not only that, but it also shows the user their musical personalities in fun ways.
This year’s theme has introduced 12 musical personalities and habits. Some include The Hunter: who skips tracks more than others to find new music, or people who are considered The Mastermind: who have explored several genres of music.
Senior, Griffin Marschall, who was classified as a Collector is said to be “mostly listening to their own playlists.”
“As far as their system goes with research, I think they are correct. I have a playlist with almost 4,000 songs that goes back to February 2020. I think that’s pretty true,” Marschall said.
Overall, most of the world’s top artists were Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Lana Del Rey or Drake.
When it came to top songs, the most played song this year was “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus or the song “Seven” by Jungkook, ranking at number 4.
Spotify Wrapped took a lot of time analyzing the globe altogether. Their website showed numerous trends that were throughout the year.
Spotify noted how they saw a rise in playlists called Girl Dinner, The Roman Empire, and how the Barbie Soundtrack was on the rise at 1,560% for listeners. That’s a lot of Barbie Girl listening!
Artists like Rhianna, who hasn’t released an album since 2016, saw over a 640% increase in music streams because of her halftime performance.
Junior, Phia O’Kane, had Liana Flores as their top artist, and rap as their top genre. They also had over 99,712 minutes listened too, which is 69 days!
“I probably got to all those hours because of how much music I listen to in class. I’m constantly discovering music,” O’Kane said.
Teachers like Band Director Mr. Philip Kaul have a little bit of a different Spotify Wrapped reveal! With over 8 thousand minutes, it’s full of marching band songs. 89 times he played “Last Train Home” by Pat Metheny.
“This happened because of warmups and rehearsals, I usually play it for them,” Mr. Philip Kaul said.
Some students find it funny to see this being his Spotify Wrapped. Other music talks of his Wrapped included Reputation by Taylor Swift for Scholars Bowl.
“I’m not ashamed of it. I’m proud” said Mr. Philip Kaul.
All music listeners can say they enjoy the release of Spotify Wrapped. With this yearly release, the listener is able to track their music history while also exploring some facts about themselves.
Who knew that some of the music listeners who walk the earth with us are considered a time traveler?
