Many students participate in different activities at De Soto High School and outside of school. For Junior Savannah Stine devoting her time to many activities is natural.

“I am involved in debate, band, robotics, forensics and Scholars Bowl,” Stine said. “I was also selected to perform in many trombone ensembles over the summer.”

In this year’s marching band show, Latin Explosion, Stine performed a trombone solo during the song Malagueña.

“I offered and I was the highest chair in the trombone section to play. I took lessons and practiced almost daily. I was always worried if I was gonna be loud enough or play in time.”

Latin Explosion took a 1 at the K-State marching festival and won the Baker marching festival.

Stine is a trombone section leader. Section leaders take care of helping students with music and marching while leading everyone to be a better musician.

In addition to being busy with school activities, Stine also finds time to volunteer.

”Every summer for the last four years I have volunteered at a Christian summer camp called Oaklawn. I go there daily and tend to the gardens, lead worship, help create the yearbook and generally supervise kids.”

This is Stine’s third year in Policy Debate.

“In debate, I’ve medaled three times, gotten third place at a tournament twice, helped win sweepstakes for two tournaments, best record in the entire program last year and state team,” Stine said

Stine hopes to study political science after she graduates high school.
