Wildcat students participate in Vocational Technology classes

Vocational Technology (VoTech) classes are a great way for students to get a head start on a career path. These classes are generally non-academic and more practical than the traditional curriculum.

The idea of VoTech is to give on-the-job training specific to one trade or occupation, rather than a general education of subjects such as math or science.

“[Classes are for] students who are interested in different areas [such as] Culinary, Health, Auto Collision and Plant and Animal Health careers,” guidance counselor Christine Johns said.

DHS doesn’t offer these classes on campus, but instead busses students to Eudora every morning during first block.

“If students are interested in the programs, they can attend a field trip in February and applications are due in March. Decisions for who gets into the classes are made in April,” Johns said. “We only have a limited number of spots for each program.”

This year, 32 students from DHS take the bus ride down to Eudora every morning for the classes.

Since the classes are held every day, unlike De Soto’s block schedule, a full year of VoTech is equivalent to two technology credits.

“It’s a great class,” said junior Gabby Collins. “Instead of just sitting in a class all day, we actually get to go out and get hands-on experience.”
