Meet the Candidates

Who do you want representing the Student Body for the 2016-17 school year? Meet your two Student Council presidential candidates and find out what they’ll do for you.

Meet the Candidates
Simon Couch: A&M Crew, Scholars Bowl, Student Council, Madrigals, LITE Team, National Honors Society, Tennis and Power Lifting
Becca Clancy: Student Council, Cheer, Swim, Band, Thespians, the musical, Yearbook, LITE Team, National Honor Society and Prom Committee

Why are you running for Student Council President?

Couch: Ever since I came to De Soto, I feel like my main goal was to make people feel as comfortable and welcome as possible and being apart of Student Council has made me realize that that’s really what the point of it is, regardless of how everyone else has put it. I feel like being president, I could really help advance that.
Clancy: I’m running because I enjoy being in a leadership position and I feel as though my last two years in StuCo, I have gained a lot of experience in that. I really enjoy organizing things in StuCo, like dances and the blood drive and other activities like that. I think as president, I would get more leadership and more opportunities to do that. I think I’m a good face of the school; I know a lot of people and I just think I would be good at that.
What will you do for the student body as Student Council President?
Couch: I think the biggest thing is taking the ideas that other people have and implementing them. There’s no policies or things that I think are absolutely necessary, it’s what others think.
Clancy: One of my main goals is to bring the school together more. We’ve increased the school spirit a lot this past year and I’d like to see that get better. We did themes at games, and I’d like to see that increase so that it’s not just at football and basketball, it’s at other activities. I want to see more school spirit in the school.
Why do you think you would be a good representative of the student body?
Couch: I’m involved in a lot of things, and I think that’s really important to get to know De Soto. In addition, I try to make this environment more welcoming to other people, and I think that’s what people should strive for.
Clancy: I think I would be a good representative because I’ve been involved in a lot of activities at the school in my three years here that have allowed me to get to know a wide variety of people, like band kids, theater kids, cheerleaders. I just know a large population of our student body. I feel like knowing them, I will be able to represent them more fairly and I think I have a lot of ideas that people can relate to.
Why should people vote for you?
Couch: I think if other people have things that they want to get started but they don’t know where to look to make it happen, I would be a really good person to help them out.
Clancy: People should vote for me because I have a lot of ideas to bring the school together. The typical, ‘I’ll make the school lunches better,’ that’s not really something we can do, but I think I have a lot of ideas that will bring the school together. I feel like since I know so many people I would be the best person to represent them most fairly.
