The night of January 16th comes to De Soto High School
“The Night of January 16th,” written by Ayn Rand, is the school play for the spring semester, and will be performed March 2-5. Following the story of the trial of Karen Andre, a secretary accused of murdering her employer.
Drama teacher Jason Hagg felt that the show would be good for the community because of the interactive prt of the show.
“I really believe the interaction part of it would be really fun for our audiences,” Hagg said.
In keeping with the trial aspect of the show, the audience will act as the jury, and even choose the fate of the secretary in the show: guilty or innocent.
The audience’s decision will go off of the performance of the two lawyers, which will be played by sophomores Jack Torline and Ben Pickert.
The largest challenge the two face is of lines they have to memorize.
“It’s a lot of just focus right now… It’s going pretty well. It’s hard,” Torline said.
While the lawyers have the most lines of any other characters in the show, Hagg believes that the witnesses are as important to the story.
“In my mind, our witnesses are the lead roles. We have 13 or so [witnesses]. Sure, Jack and Ben have a ton of lines, but our witnesses are so important that they become more of a focus than the two lawyers,” Hagg said.
The De Soto rendition of “The Night of Janurary 16th” will play on March 2-5 this year.
