Sophomore Transfer Students
High schools in the same district always have different personalities. And USD 232 high schools are no different.
For the past few years, the USD 232 school district has been allowing kids to transfer from Mill Valley High School to De Soto High School.
MVHS, located in Shawnee, KS, has had students fill out applications to be enrolled in DHS, located in De Soto, KS, a good twenty-minute drive from their home school.
Though many people know where they want to go by the end of eighth grade, a few kids change their minds after freshman year.
“I said yes [to a tour of DHS] because I didn’t like Mill Valley,” said transfer sophomore Trevor Gress.
A big reason for many transfers, is the amount of people at each school.
Mill Valley is a very big school full of students whereas DHS is smaller.
“There’s less people… mainly less crowded,” said transfer student sophomore Taylor Lillich.
Another big reason is that not only are there less people, but the people are nicer, according to the transfer students.
“The people are a lot friendlier than they were at Mill Valley,” Lillich said.
Size and personalities of the students are not the only reasons for transfers.
Students transfer for friends, to get away from their reputations, having issues with teachers, or having issues with the way they learn at Mill Valley.
The transfer students are very happy with their decision to come to DHS.
“Overall, it’s just a lot better school,” said transfer student sophomore Garrett Hilmes
