If you know me very well, you know that I’m a pretty knowledgeable geek. With a mother that read Lord of the Rings to me as a child and a father who might as well have slammed the Star Trek and Star Wars universes down my throat, I was forced into the geekdom of my family. However I prefer to keep the geekiness hidden inside. I guess you could say this is my “coming out of the Geek closet” admission. While I enjoy the stories and the things that come from geeks, going to the things that fellow geeks go to is just hilarious.
I didn’t go anywhere over spring break, and while the rest of my friends were in Phoenix, watching spring training or snowboarding somewhere, I decided to take advantage of a fantastic people watching opportunity: Planet Comicon.
Planet Comicon, a teeming mass of unwashed, trekkied up, (or in Star Wars gear, it’s personal preference) cosplayed, and tatted American citizens exercising their right of free speech.
Planet Comicon, the only place where I have seen a complete set of Star Trek dinner plates with a different character on each plate.
Planet Comicon, where the Star Wars theme song is playing at all times from a Ford F-150 painted in a way that chronicles every scene from the original Star Wars trilogy.
But in reality, it was a lot of fun. I love comic books and they literally have thousands upon hundreds of them, as well as aspiring artists trying to make a living in the comic book business. You can also buy shirts and almost anything essential to a geek’s daily life, which is important.
While it’s not necessary to dress up as a character or a vampire bride, it does give pretty much anyone a good excuse to go around shirtless and get your picture taken. Overall, it was a very fun experience and I came home with a pretty sick Spiderman poster.
