Halloween, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is defined as a holiday observed especially with dressing up in disguise, trick-or-treating and displaying jack-o’-lanterns during the evening. However, teenagers have morphed this seemingly jovial holiday into a night of poor judgments and scantily costumes at Halloween parties.
Over the weekend, numerous groups of teenagers attended Halloween parties and turned this night of fright into a night of frightful sights. I witnessed, through social media, numerous teens committing illegal acts while wearing minimal amounts of clothing. Although the clothing does not apply to men, they were not discouraging of the attire. I saw a plethora of people dressed as revealing cops or suggestive referees.
This, itself, saddens me. Women should not be so supportive of wearing revealing clothing, and men should not be supportive of women showing off their body to everyone. Women should have enough self-respect to refrain from wearing suggestive attire. Although this is a day of dress-up, dressing respects poorly on ones’ character and moral conscious.
Also, I understand that Halloween is supposed to be a day of pretending to be someone different, however, I do not agree with degrading someone’s’ professional career by wearing revealing costumes that make a mockery of their work. This is just blatantly disrespectful. Instead, teens should choose costumes that they would feel comfortable wearing in front of their family and in front of those within that profession.
Along with this, teens should consider the possible repercussions of partaking in these illegal activities. It saddens me to see some teens throwing away their life so early for harmful substances and popularity. Fitting in is not worth risking ones’ life for.
All in all, I think that teens need to reconsider the meaning of this holiday. It is not to celebrate poor judgment and inappropriate clothing, but rather to embrace traditions and eerie tales that have been passed down for generations.
