If you’re like me then you are probably wanting to spice up your Netflix viewing experience. If you’re also like me you’re probably scared to try many of the movies avaliable on Netflix. Recently, though, I mustered up enough courage to jump into a movie I’ve never seen or heard of. And it was amazing.
John Dies At The End is about two friends who become hooked on a new street drug called soy sauce, and its side effects allow them to see things no one else can see and do things no one else can do. These things include being psychic and being able to see otherworldy creatures.
The plot seems straight forward enough for the first 30 minutes, but then the movie gets comfortable with what it’s doing and goes absolutely crazy with the plot, characters and action, which is probably the best and worst part of the whole movie.
The crazy plot is good, because it gives the writers a chance to create amazing set pieces (most notably an encounter with a monster made out of butcher meat) and pose many philisophical questions about life and the possibilites of alternate dimensions.
On the other hand, the eccentric plot is bad, because it never seems like the movie starts. About every 10 minutes a new conflict is thrown at the characters but never brought up again. This becomse so disorienting that when you reach the final act and the main villian is confronted those watching have completely forgotten that he exists. If anything the problem is that the movie is too ambitious, which isn’t really a bad thing.
Another problem I have with this movie, and a quite unfortunate one at that, is that the CGI special effects are terrible. This is a shame because there is no way some of the things that happen in this movie could be done with out CGI. If any thing, it would be great to see this movie re-made with a better budget and improved effects.
The best part of the whole movie is the writing. The dialouge is hilarious, dark and quirky. This superb writing is front and center when David Wong, the main character, is talking to his dead friend, John. That scene also show cases just how crazy and creative the movie can be.
All in all, John Dies At The End is a fun and quirky movie that is definitely worth checking out if you have the time. The strange plot and special effects may scare some people away, but if you see it through to the end, it ends up being a memoriable movie.
