De Soto High School is too lazy. Recently, I have been exposed to many degrees of this laziness by students who are more than capable of completing the assignments they are given.
Some students are not completing or attempting homework. Even if a teacher gives them class time, students just ignore it and stuff the assignment in their backpack. The next class period the student pulls out the homework, still untouched. Sadly, kindergartners have better return rates on their homework than these students.
These students are also, not surprisingly, ignoring online quizzes that teachers assign. This happened recently in a class that will remain nameless. A quiz that was supposed to remain open for a week ended up taking closer to three weeks for students to complete. The only reason it took so long was because less than 50 percent had completed the quiz by the original due date.
When this occurs, it almost seems pointless to have a due date. Therefore, I offer a modest proposal that De Soto High School gets rid of all deadlines. After all, a due date is not supposed to move and those who miss it are supposed to receive a zero.
For some odd reason this did not happen in the above situation. This leniency is occurring in other classes as well. If a student turns in homework late, many times it is accepted at full credit. So the most logical solution is to get rid of all deadlines.
This will allow students to do as they please and it will keep teachers from having to fret over students who do not turn in assignments on time. It will also keep students like me, who always try to meet the deadline, from getting angry when people who turn homework in late receive the same credit.
Students’ social lives are obviously too important to turn in homework on time. A text message cannot wait but that Spanish homework? Of course it can!
Furthermore, this will keep students who are too busy, yet have time to get in an argument on Twitter, from getting too stressed out about remembering deadlines. It will also keep students from ‘forgetting’ their homework since they don’t really have a reason to bring it and thus don’t have to remember it.
This forgetfulness students are struck with will finally be cured. It’s not like the administration has assigned agendas to every single student to solve this very problem, which is why we need to eliminate all deadlines.
Deadlines are like the devil to students, and, we don’t want school to be like heck to students do we? Therefore, deadlines must be eliminated.
