Team leadership is an essential part of having a successful team. When this important aspect is lacking or missing completely, it affects the teams ability to function as a whole.
A large portion of having a well operating team is having patience for all members. Abilities that may come naturally for some, others struggle with. A person that is in a leadership role must encourage that person no matter the circumstance.
The little things that one person says can make a drastic difference in the overall performance of that member. Giving simply one positive comment to each member per practice could both brighten their day and encourage them to do better. Without support for all members, a team is more likely to not perform to its potential.
Leadership does not only mean giving support to one another, but also making sacrifices for one another. One must be able to adjust their schedule to assist another member when they are struggling or having issues with a certain aspect of the sport. If one does not have the ability to have a flexible schedule, this role is probably not appropriate for them.
Overall, if one wants to be in a leadership role, the individual needs to have the teams best interest in their mind. Every member on the team needs to feel important and as if they are contributing to the team. To be a leader you need to be able to both give, and receive criticism.
