Choirs perform their first concert of the year
If you have heard singing voices drifting through the halls of De Soto High School, you’re no longer alone. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, the DHS Concert Choir, Voce and Descants all performed in their first concert of the school year.
“I thought we did really well. A lot of the underclassmen choirs improved a lot from last year,” said senior choir president Kirsten Stous. “Everybody knew the music pretty well and I thought we were prepared.”
Many of the songs chosen for the concert followed the central theme of this year’s solar eclipse, which was partially visible from DHS on Aug. 21.
“It was eclipse-themed, so all the songs were centered around light and the eclipse and the moon,” Stous said.
The concert was punctuated by solo performances by senior Katie Dossett and juniors Lexi Marshall and Trace Harre. It was also the first fall performance for the all-women De Soto Descants group.
Stous and Harre agreed that their favorite part of participating in choir has been the community they have been a part of and the friends they have made.
“I think just like the community feel of it … everybody [in choir] is pretty close with each other, and we know each other really well,” Stous said.
“I enjoy the friends I make in choir,” Harre added. “[Choir is] just something that I like to do. It’s probably like my thing. You know how people have sports … so [my thing] is choir.”
The next performance for the vocal music program is the Christmas concert in early December, and Harre would encourage those who have not previously supported the choir to attend concerts in the future.
“More people should [attend concerts]. I think it’s just a fun way to loosen up,” Harre said with a laugh.
