Band performs third annual glow show

On Oct. 23 De Soto High School’s marching band suited up for another performance.

This wasn’t just any performance though, it was the glow show which was performed after the homecoming football game.

“We always do it at the end [of the marching season], it is kind of like a fun thing,” said band director Matt Bradford.

For the glow show, band members put glow sticks on their instruments, their costumes, their hair and any where else the glow sticks would stay.

“I always encourage them to coordinate [with sections] but they never do, so it’s all one big mass of color” Bradford said.

After the football players ran off into the locker rooms after the game, the band took the field.

Bradford turned off the stadium lights, and the band members, along with their instruments, lit up the night.

They played their usual performance, including the light saber battle, and the audience marveled at the neon figures moving around on the field.

Although the glow show looks cool, there are some challenges.

“They can’t really see,” Bradford laughed, “they just make sure they are in between the two people on either side of them.”

10 to 15 inch glow wands are placed on the yard lines so the band members can actually tell where the yard lines are.

After the performance, the band came together in one, big celebratory mass, with those who participate in the big lightsaber battle in the middle.

Glow sticks were thrown from the band members up into the sky and the stands.

The band will continue this tradition for upcoming marching seasons.
