Drama teacher Mary Yarnell took several thespians and drama students to see Dracula the ballet at the Kauffman Center February 27.
The dancing was incredible, and the set and costume design was also really good, but the plot was difficult to follow.
The ballet was filled with pas de deux, a style of ballet that involves lifts and requires partnering, on a very challenging level. Although, it was a ballet there was a good combination of classical pointe, contemporary style pointe and theatrical dancing where there was more acting and natural interaction between dancers.
The theatrical dancing benefitted the show because it helped the audience to understand what was going on better, because there are no words.
One problem I had with the ballet was that the plot was difficult to follow for someone who has not read the book. Typically at ballets the plot is in the program, however they did not provide programs at the student show. As a result, lots of people were lost and had to try to figure out what was going on.
Overall the show was very good, and it was filled with lots of tension, talented dancers and beautiful music.
