On Nov. 26, the De Soto High School madrigals went to Crown Center in downtown Kansas City to sing some festive carols.
Theses carols included such songs as Here We Come A Caroling, A Caroling We Go and Carol of the Bells. In addition to this, the group sang some other songs not pertaining to the holidays including How Can I Keep from Singing, Gonna Rise Up Singing and Mouse Madrigal. Choir instructor Maryetta Copeland led the group and was proud of their performance.
“We did fabulous as a group. What is so cool about going there is having the ability to let people know about the talent we have here in De Soto. For some people, De Soto is unforeseen,” Copeland said.
Copeland confessed that the turn out at Crown Center was much better than previous years. She appreciates the crowds respect and enthusiasm.
“The audience was incredibly diverse and respectable. We have had audiences in the past be disruptive but everyone was pleasant and complimentary,” Copeland said.
The group overcame obstacles including having to perform right after coming back from Thanksgiving Break. This caused the group to have close to no rehearsal before performing songs that they learned a few weeks in advance.
“We had several people, including a prominent jazz musician located in the Kansas City area, applause us for our surprising amount of high quality singers They could not believe that we had come from such a small school. I also received comments from people who were impressed with the wide variety of music that we sang,” Copeland said.
