On Jan. 24, the nominees for the Academy Awards were announced. Theses nominees will compete for the famous Oscar statues in the 84th Academy Awards show that will be held in Los Angeles on Feb. 26.
Some of the main categories are; Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Leading Role and Best Director. While the Best Picture nominees included The Help, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Hugo, War Horse and Midnight in Paris, many were surprised that the highly praised, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, or the action movie, Drive did not receive a nomination.
Some other well deserving performers that were failed to be considered were actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, who did not receive a nomination for Best Actor, and director Steven Spielberg, who directed both War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin, did not receive a nomination for Best Director.
“I was disappointed by some of the people that I thought were left off of the Best Actor and Best Actress nominations. For example, I thought Ryan Gosling should of been nominated for Drive, which was the movie I also thought should have been nominated for Best Picture, not War Horse,” drama teacher Erin Purifoy said.
Besides the snubs, worthy movies, actors and actresses like George Clooney, Meryl Streep and The Help received well deserving nominations.
Even though some may be surprised by certain nominations, every year millions of people tune in to join some of the most famous names in movies, all eager to see who will receive an Oscar.
“I watch the Oscars (Academy Awards) every year, and the winners never cease to surprise me,” senior Kasey Dunlap said.
